We cannot manage and work sustainably with the natural world without understanding its complexities, in particular appreciating the ways in which man’s activities are impinging on natural processes. Understanding involves observation – monitoring. In western society monitoring has traditionally been undertaken by the state, a situation which is increasingly changing as central government devolves its responsibilities to local and increasingly non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In the developing world effective monitoring rarely happens, again a situation which is slowly changing as non-government organizations are increasingly encouraged and empowered to take up this role. However, sustainable monitoring of the sustainable-use of natural resources is still far from reality in most poorer countries.
Therefore, as well as being an icon for mutually beneficial exchange across the east-west-north-south-rich-poor divide, MANGO is also our Trust acronym:
Monitoring Assistance for Non Governmental Organizations
Our objective with the igoMANGO programme is to support NGO monitoring effort with financial and logistical input provided by clients and volunteers who will gain in return true insight (experience and education) into local lifestyles and environments in remote corners of the world.
