Conservation
The world is metaphorically getting smaller and human populations are rapidly expanding; the need for biodiversity and habitat conservation is great. In the developing world there is a difficult juxtaposition between man's needs for survival, and conserving the environment he relies upon. We cannot manage and work sustainably with the natural world without understanding its complexities, in particular appreciating the ways in which man’s activities are impinging on natural processes. Understanding involves observation – monitoring. In many parts of the developing world effective monitoring rarely happens, a situation which is slowly changing as non-government organizations (NGOs) are increasingly encouraged and empowered by governments to take up this role. However, sustainable monitoring of the sustainable-use of natural resources (read that again!) is still far from reality in most poorer countries. It is the ambition of MANGO to assist local NGO’s monitoring effort in their social and conservation programmes, focused on educating both local populations and governments, and preserving biodiversity and habitat.. |
